Event updates (covid-19)

21st May, 2020 – event cancelled

Dear riders & supporters,

As you can imagine, we have been working hard to consider all possible options and scenarios for this year’s RBC GranFondo Whistler given the circumstances surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Wednesday May 6th the provincial government of British Columbia announced their 4 phase re-opening plan for the province. Events and mass gatherings, including the RBC GranFondo Whistler, will only be permitted within the fourth phase of the planned normalization of operations, and would fall past our scheduled date. Given this announcement we have no alternative but to cancel this year’s RBC GranFondo Whistler.

We are incredibly disappointed with this outcome, although we know it is the correct decision. Our team works tirelessly year round to host this event, and we love bringing you this amazing experience and showcasing the beauty of British Columbia.

Registered riders will receive an email communication detailing the next steps with their entry and purchases.

We will continue to work towards an exciting series of offerings in 2021 including the triumphant return of the 2021 RBC GranFondo Whistler.

Our sincere wishes that you stay healthy and happy,

The RBC GranFondo Whistler Team

A message from title sponsor RBC – Royal Bank of Canada

“On behalf of Team RBC, I want to give my sincere thanks to Neil and his amazing team for their passionate and unwavering dedication to keeping the dream alive for the RBC GranFondo Whistler 2020.

“While we are all very disappointed the 11th annual RBC GranFondo Whistler will not proceed amidst these unprecedented times, our number one priority remains steadfastly focused on the health and safety of our participants and their communities, and it is critical we continue to plan with an over-abundance of caution.

“RBC is poised and excited to work hand-in-hand with our race partners throughout the rest of 2020 and make the 2021 RBC GranFondo Whistler the most memorable in the event’s history.”

Questions and answers

Is the RBC GranFondo Whistler 2020 still happening this year?

No. On Wednesday May 6th the provincial government of British Columbia announced their 4 phase re-opening plan for the province. Events and mass gatherings, including the RBC GranFondo Whistler, will only be permitted within the fourth phase of the plan when a vaccine or other successful medical treatment is widely available. Given this announcement we have no alternative but to cancel the 2020 RBC GranFondo Whistler.

Why have you cancelled the GFW 2020 instead of postponing it?

Daylight hours and weather conditions make postponing the event to any later in the year impossible. Additionally the government mandate on gatherings of over 50 people will remain in place until a vaccine is developed which is unlikely to happen in 2020.
